During the lab with the Greenwood Genetic Center, students explored the determination of calico cats using karyotype analysis and gel electrophoresis.

This aligns with the 8th-grade science Genetics unit, which covers inheritance and variation in traits.

During the lab, students used micropipettes to extract calico cat DNA and transferred it into gel models, then they ran the samples through gel electrophoresis to determine the karyotypes of Sasha the Cat. Some students participated in the lab on the Greenwood Genetics CenterMobile Science Lab Bus while others worked through the lab in the classroom.

Chalk the Walk for SC Ready

Our AVID students practiced giving back to our school family by creating positive sidewalk chalk messages for SC READY testing. They filled our campus with encouraging words, colorful drawings, and reminders for students to stay calm, try their best, and show what they know.

This was a simple but meaningful way for our AVID students to serve others, build school spirit, and remind every student that they are supported.

We are proud of our AVID students for leading with kindness and helping create a positive testing environment for our school family. You’ve got this! We are SC READY!

On April 22nd, our 6th grade AVID students had a great field study experience at Locklair Farm and Supply in Gaston, SC! 🌱🚜 We learned more about how our food is grown and the agricultural techniques that help every part of the ecosystem work together in harmony. Students also got to step back in time and enjoy old-fashioned games like Toss the Tater 🥔, the Bean Bucket Challenge, and a feed sack race 🏁

All in all, we learned the value of agriculture, teamwork, hard work, and community, and we are so appreciative of this new perspective right here in our own community. 💚🌾 Thank you to everyone at Locklair Farm and Supply for such a fun and meaningful day! 🙌
